The Traveler’s Key to Ancient Greece, New Edition: A Guide to Sacred Places: Richard Geldard

The Traveler's Key to Ancient Greece, New Edition: A Guide to Sacred Places: Richard Geldard

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Geldard, who has authored several volumes on Emersonian philosophy and whose doctorate from Stanford is a combined degree in Classics and Drama, has compiled a massive and comprehensive guide equipped with helpful maps, diagrams, and drawings to Greece’s many archaeological sites. First, he provides a historical background of the area, dating back to the hunters and gatherers, and explains Greek religion, architecture, and mathematics. He then takes the reader to the various sites, dividing them into the palace cultures, the temple cultures, and the lesser place and temple sites, with detailed descriptions of such places as Knossos, Phaestos, Delphi, Olympia, and Athens. Any traveler with fewer than six months to explore could not begin to see all the sites Geldard has presented here, which is why the guidebook is ideal for librariesDpatrons can decide for themselves which sites to investigate further. Still, though its pages are packed with useful information, this guide is probably a bit too academic for the average tourist.DMelinda Stivers Leach, Precision Editorial Svcs., Wondervu, CO

The final, eclectic itinerary focuses on the Cyclades and features island-hopping and a survey of the full span of Greek antiquity from the late Neolithic Age through the Classical period when the island of Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo, was the religious center of the Aegean. Each itinerary includes witty and erudite explorations of mythology, history, literature, archaeology, and architecture, as well as concrete help finding the most stunning sites that preserve and breathe that history today.

Athens Scenes From Capital Cit: John Cleave

Editorial Reviews

Vibrant and rapidly evolving Athens, confluence of the ancient and modern worlds, is the subject of this colourful pictorial essay. Historic monuments crown this mythology-laden city — from the bare marble grandeur of the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus to the stately ruins of the temple of Olympian Zeus. Athens’ conjunction of the very old and the relatively new results in many quaint neighbourhoods. Tour Plaka, the oldest quarter of modern Athens; the market district of Monastiraki; the cafés and bars of Psirri; or the excellent museums and trendy boutiques of Kolonaki. In addition, explore the wider Athens, set against the sun-drenched hill of Lycabettus and the glistening waters of the Saronic Gulf. Architectural photographer John Cleave has taken his original photographs of post-Olympic Athens and modified them with the use of Adobe Photoshop, creating an individual and artistic rendering of the enchanting city.

American Travellers in Liverpool (Lup - Poetry and …): David Seed

American Travellers in Liverpool (Lup - Poetry and ...): David Seed

Editorial Reviews

Liverpool was the first British port of call for most American travelers in the nineteenth century—and though some, like sour wordsmith Henry James, preferred to describe the more picturesque Chester, many left accounts of their experiences in the city. This volume unearths some of these richly detailed passages—by the likes of Herman Melville, writing on the Liverpool docks, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, recording his years as American consul—and pairs them with other fascinating glimpses of a Liverpool past by such towering historical figures as Harriet Beecher Stowe, John James Audubon, and Frederick Douglass. The excerpts collected here paint a portrait of Liverpool through American eyes—and demonstrate the rich variety of cultural contacts between the two nations during centuries gone by.

About the Author
David Seed is professor of American literature at the University of Liverpool. His many publications include Brainwashing: The Fictions of Mind Control and American Science Fiction and the Cold War.
