There are more clichés about Paris than there are tourists at the Louvre, but the fact is that underneath each overused hackneyed cliché is a glistening kernel of truth. The City of Light, the City of Love and the City of Romance, familiar platitudes, but once you experience it for yourself you understand why. There is a je ne sais quoi allure to this city that beguiles, but never completely reveals what makes it so universally appealing. Artists, poets, writers, and composers have tried to define exactly what it is about this place, and yet they succeed only to a point. Perhaps it is as elusive as defining love, for to be in Paris entails experiencing love, about someone, something, some place.

There is so much to do - you know the big ones, the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, Sacre Coeur, St. Germain des Pres, the Left Bank, the Right Bank, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées, the Opéra- but don’t miss the fun of discovering the small ones, the ones off the beaten path. Nothing like taking your time strolling thru the turn of the century mansion that houses Musée Marmottan then enjoying a café and patisserie in the museums jewel box café.

Wandering aimlessly is romantic. Getting lost isn’t romantic. In fact there are few things that can drain the romance out of a situation faster than realizing that you’re hopelessly lost. So take your travel map and put it away if you want to wander, but have no fear that your wandering will turn into a lost odyssey. You can always pull out the STREETWISE® Paris Map and get yourself pointed back in the right direction.

Paris is not without faults. Sometimes people can be rude, but that’s the case anywhere in the world - be it a large city or small village. You get what you give. And in the case of Paris, as with any true love, you accept the flaws with the charms, the weaknesses with the strengths. In the end the true beauty of Paris will surpass any blemish. Life from a Parisian perspective is beautiful. But that’s another cliché, isn’t it?

Our pocket size map of Paris is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. Hungry for Paris: The Ultimate Guide to the City’s 102 Best Restaurants: Alexander Lobrano

Hungry for Paris: The Ultimate Guide to the City's 102 Best Restaurants: Alexander Lobrano

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
A Paris vacation in book form, this volume travels from the glittering restaurants of the Boulevard St.-Germain to the grittier haunts of Belleville and Clichy, offering insights into classic bistros, new favorites and even a smattering of ethnic cheapies (the sorts of dining establishments that Parisians themselves have only just started getting used to). Lobrano, European correspondent for Gourmet magazine, is an observant and dedicated restaurant-hound, noting the peculiarities of a certain proprietor at one brasserie, recording the exact temperature at which oysters are served at another. No entry is longer than two or three pages, but rest assured they’re fully stocked with strong opinions and recommendations; happily, Lobrano is unafraid to challenge culinary convention, calling L’Ami Louis, long a brutally expensive stop on the “when in Paris” tour, “a pretty egregious example of conspicuous consumption… especially when you can find better roast chicken and foie gras anywhere.” Not since Patricia Wells’s classic Food Lover’s Guide to Paris has a guidebook given readers such a mouthwatering tour of the City of Lights.

WHEN IN PARIS. . . .

If you’re passionate about eating well during your next trip to Paris, you couldn’t ask for a better travel companion than Alexander Lobrano’s charming, friendly, and authoritative Hungry for Paris, the first new comprehensive guide in many years to the city’s restaurant scene. Lobrano, Gourmet magazine’s European correspondent, has written for almost every major food and travel magazine since he became an American in Paris in 1986. Here he shares his personal selection of the city’s 102 best restaurants, each of which is portrayed in savvy, fun, lively descriptions that are not only indispensable for finding a superb meal but a pleasure to read.

Lobrano reveals the hottest young chefs, the coziest bistros, the best buys–including those haute cuisine restaurants that are really worth the money–and the secret places Parisians love most, together with information on the most delicious dishes, ambience, clientele, and history of each restaurant. A series of delightful essays cover various aspects of dining in Paris, including “Table for One” (how to eat alone), “The Four Seasons” (the best of seasonal eating in Paris), and “Eating the Unspeakable” (learning to eat what you don’t think you like). All restaurants are keyed to helpful maps, and the book is seasoned with beautiful photographs by Life magazine photographer Bob Peterson that will only help whet your appetite for tasting Paris.

Praise for Hungry for Paris:
"Every time I go to Paris I call Alec and ask him where to eat. Nobody else has such an intimate knowledge of what is going on in the Paris food world right this minute, and there is nobody I trust more to tell me all the latest news. Happily, Alec has written it all down in this wonderful book and now I can stop bothering him." –Ruth Reichl

"Hungry for Paris is a brilliant book with an almost fatal flaw: the writing is so enchanting you may never leave home to go to any of Alec’s favorite places. Few people know, love and appreciate Paris restaurants the way Alec does; no one writes about them better or with more charm." –Dorie Greenspan, author of Baking From My Home to Yours

“When I was nineteen, I went to France to study, but instead, I just ate. The experience changed me: I came back to the United States, and a few years later, started Chez Panisse. In Hungry for Paris, Alec Lobrano describes his own gastronomic awakening, probably better than I could! This book is a wonderful guide to eating in Paris.”
–Alice Waters

“I dearly hope Monsieur Lobrano has an unlisted phone number, for his book will make readers more than merely hungry for the culinary riches of his adopted city; it will make them ravenous for a dining companion with his particular warmth, wry charm, and refreshingly pure joie de vivre. Lobrano is a sly raconteur, a respectful critic, and the very best kind of insider–one who genuinely longs to share all his best discoveries.”
Julia Glass, author of The Whole World Over and Three Junes

“Organized by neighborhood and interspersed with delightful sections on such matters as eating alone. . . . This is the sort of guide you read before you go to Paris… Lobrano tells you what to expect and how to act.”-Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Lobrano . . . fleshes out his luscious prose with tempting photos. Hungry for Paris is like a cozy bistro on a chilly day: It makes you feel welcome.”
-Washington Post Book World

“Le Grand Vfour. Maxim’s. La Table de Jol Robuchon. None of these venerated restaurants are on Lobrano’s list of the 102 best in Paris. And that’s one of the reasons I love Hungry for Paris.”-Gridskipper

“A treasure trove of 102 mostly undiscovered addresses… Small and innovative bistros get the lion’s share of Lobrano’s ink, interspersed with chapters that are autobiographical, informative and entertaining.”-Women’s Wear Daily

“Lobrano is an ideal guide because he remembers who he was, how he became the expert he is now, and how you can acquire expertise. And he can do that hard thing — see what’s in front of him.”- HeadButler.com

Clotilde’s Edible Adventures in Paris: Clotilde Dusoulier

Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris: Clotilde Dusoulier

From Publishers Weekly
Dusoulier (Chocolate and Zucchini) combines the best of easy-to-page-through travel guides with the friendly, immediate feel of her charming blog and other Internet resources to provide the ideal foodie’s guide to Paris. Dusoulier’s inquisitiveness, sharp observation and affection for list-making serve her well in making this culinary heaven seem manageable. Her restaurant recommendations for each of the 20 arrondissements feel fresh and personalized, like tips from a friend, and most are relatively affordable if one follows Dusoulier’s advice for when and what to eat. She also includes a welcome range of cuisines, unlike many Paris guides; boxed sections feature Japanese, Indian and Chinese quarters of the city, with food from numerous other nations sprinkled throughout, but she doesn’t neglect classic brasseries and neo-bistros. Nearly as valuable as the lists are Dusoulier’s pointers on reading menus, how to treat the staff and French restaurant quirks. The book’s second half features judiciously selected markets, bakeries, cheese shops and other specialty outlets; again, international travelers will be gratified by her attention to non-French stores as well as those selling the best escargots, honey and wine from around the country. Topping off the book, a dozen intriguing recipes. (Apr.)

Markets of Paris: Dixon Long, Ruthanne Long, Alison Harris

Markets of Paris: Dixon Long, Ruthanne Long, Alison Harris

Editorial Reviews

Review
"The Longs (Markets of Provence ) turn their attention to Paris in this handy little guidebook. While most general travel guides list the major Parisian markets, like the famous March? aux Fleurs and March? aux Puces de Clignancourt, this guide details all the markets in the city selling food, antiques, books, crafts, and more. Entries provide the standard information for all markets, such as location, days and hours of operation, and nearest Metro stop, as well as the authors’ recommendations and detailed descriptions of the articles offered for sale, including specialty items. For travelers with limited time, suggested itineraries list markets by geographic area and open days, which allows the reader to find, for example, a flea market on the Right Bank that is open on Mondays. There are other shopping guides to Paris, such as the volume in Suzy Gershman’s "Born To Shop" series, and the Longs’ reference this and other titles in a helpful bibliography, but travelers wanting to experience Paris by strolling its markets with the locals will find this guide invaluable. Recommended for public libraries, especially those with larger travel sections." –Library Journal, April 1, 2007

"Markets of Paris is a wonderful book written by the same couple who wrote Markets of Provence. The book is more than a listing of where to locate open and roving markets — it helps you narrow down which ones are better, what personality each market has, and what you can expect to find at your favorite." –BonjourParis

"You can find pretty much anything you want in the markets of Paris: old letters, dead bears, live chickens. The only problem is that you’d have to roam around hours and hours to find them. The newly released book by [The Little Bookroom] Markets of Paris is a vade mecum for any focused Parisian shopper. A pocket sized book with hundreds of listing, the book will save you hours of searching for obscure curios. And though it retails at $16.95, in terms of opportunity cost, the book is priceless." -Gridskipper

“The Little Book Room has had the brilliant idea to publish books that might actually fit in your carry-on luggage…This is the perfect book format for toting around Paris…Markets of Paris describes in thoughtful prose a variety of Paris markets, focusing primarily on the 65 outdoor food markets that are an essential part of the Paris landscape…Assuming market browsers are bound to start salivating after feasting their eyes on the mountains of fresh fruits, cheeses, pates etc., there’s a helpful guide to bistros, restaurants, cafes, AND even wine bars within easy walking distance from the markets they’ve highlighted…But, for me, what really sets this book apart is the careful prose. Time is taken to capture the essence of how one market’s aura can differ from any other in Paris…There’s just enough here to whet your appetite, get you into the Metro, or putting on your walking shoes to explore neighborhoods that may have escaped your attention. I know that I will be throwing this handy book into my Hermes tote (just kidding!) as soon as the spring weather turns balmy.” –ParisLogue

"There’s shopping, and then there’s shopping in Paris. For those fortunate enough to have the problem of finding the best Parisian goods, be it cheese, clothing, botanical prints or porcelain, there’s Markets of Paris." –Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

"Dixon and Ruthanne Long’s Markets of Paris catalogs every market in the city, from the fresh meat and produce stalls of the open-air Marche Barbes to the quaint fabric vendors of the Marche Saint-Pierre. It’s a perfect guide to a quintessentially romantic feature of the city that’s often difficult for visitors to navigate." –Culture & Travel

"Markets of Paris, a chunky pocket guide to Paris markets by Dixon and Ruthanne Long, authors of Markets of Provence, contains details on more than 70 food markets, along with antique, craft, and flea market finds throughout the city." –The Food Section

The only complete guide to every street market and market district in Paris, with beautiful full color photographs throughout

Perhaps the most pleasurable way for any visitor to feel at home in Paris–and one of the easiest ways to get to know the city–is to meander through any of its dozens of street markets. It’s also the best way to find a wide variety of uniquely French gifts–from antique books and botanical prints to flea market finds and household goods–not to mention legendary cheeses, produce, and bounty of the French countryside.

The authors have explored and described every market in every neighborhood. They also have included streets that are devoted to selling one type of thing–from the centuries-old booksellers along the Seine to those lined with stores selling items as varied as fabric and discounted designer clothing.

And, for everyone who feels their time in the city is all too short, they have suggested itineraries based on the opening days of the markets with local restaurant recommendations.

Also included are tips, translations of important phrases, and pointers on what to look for so that the visitor will be able to make the most of this exhilarating and fun French experience.

All the market information is supplemented by sidebars that round out the experience, including a listing of favorite wine bars, a visit to the wood oven in the cellar of the famous bakery Poilane, and strolls down the best shopping streets in Paris.

Walks Through Lost Paris: A Journey Into the Heart of Historic Paris: Leonard Pitt, Alexandre Gady

Editorial Reviews

When he discovered that the city he lived in for many years was actually entirely rebuilt during the mid-1800s, Leonard Pitt plunged into Paris’s history and began photographing what he learned had changed. Eventually, he led tours and gave lectures on the demolition and reconstruction that changed the city forever. Walks Through Lost Paris chronicles Paris’s great periods of urban reconstruction through four walking tours. With a special focus on the work of Georges-Eugene Haussmann, this book provides a history of each site along with the motives behind the urban redesign and the reactions of Parisians who witnessed it. Detailed maps take the traveler through a city whose changes were captured by photographers and artists in each stage. Hundreds of color photos, diagrams, and engravings splendidly survey the massive transformation that resulted in the Paris of today.

"Well designed, lavishly illustrated, and conveniently pocket-size, Chic Shopping Paris skips the heavy hitters of the Avenue Montaigne in favor of following in the footsteps of real Parisian shoppers, who mix L’Eclaireur and Louboutin with Le Comptoir des Cotonniers and insider addresses like Dante & Maria, Philippe Roucou, and Louison—and she throws in a host of addresses for finding very French cadeaux, perfumes and objects for the home." –Style.com

"Chic Shopping Paris will guide you to some of the best stores in the City of Light. Don’t expect to read only about department stores; there are lots of boutiques here. The secret of dressing like a Parisian starts with les bonnes adresses: the coveted, seldom-shared addresses of the best shops. When author Rebecca Magniant moved to Paris five years ago, she made it her mission to find the best boutiques in the city–and that she did. When some of her finds impressed her impossibly chic belle mere (mother-in-law), she knew she was on to something. She went on to found Paris’s premiere shopping service, Chic Shopping Paris, and now reveals her prized list of boutiques whose offerings embody quintessential Parisian style.

Even as the world seems to be getting smaller, with everything imaginable available on the Internet, there remain some things that can only be found where they are designed and made–in France.
